Where Do You Draw the Line?

Someone asked me recently, “Where do you draw the line between using your mind and being led by the Spirit of God?” As he was asking me the question, I heard this in my spirit, “Why would you?” Why would you draw a line?

Your mind is limited by what it can perceive around you. It’s a blessing in that it can perceive appropriate natural reactions to certain situations such as when a car swerves in front of you in traffic. I’m speaking from experience. In that instance, my eyes see the car swerving in front of me, and they send a signal to my brain with information. My mind says, “Avoid!” My hands respond and steer my car out of the way. My mind and body allow me to function in this natural world, but they can’t perceive or fully grasp spiritual concepts. Paul wrote about this in Romans 8.

So why would you draw a line and say, “Holy Spirit, you can assist, prompt, and guide me to a certain point but no farther? We are spirit beings, created in the image of God, made new by His Spirit (2 Corinthians 5:17). Why would you limit the one who can teach you through the Bible, counsel you, lead you, guide you, and reveal what God has for you?

Here are Jesus’ words about the Holy Spirit.

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever.” John 14:16 (ESV)

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” John 14:26 (ESV)

“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.” John 15:26 (ESV)

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” John 16:13-14 (ESV)

It’s possible to be led by the Holy Spirit. Paul wrote in Romans 8:14, “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” (ESV) That’s talking about you. You can be led by the Spirit of God.

You have the opportunity to live a life that is so much more rich in knowledge and perception through the direction and instruction of the Holy Spirit. Why would you choose to be limited or to limit what God wants you to know by saying, “I’m drawing a line.” We gave ourselves fully to Jesus’ lordship. So let’s allow Him to be Lord, and let’s learn how to be led by the Holy Spirit.

No lines. Just relationship.
